Human Powered: Humanity Unlocked

When James Price first learned how to bead, he was incarcerated at the Stanley Correctional Institution in Wisconsin. He noticed a Native American man beading, so he asked if he could buy a pair of earrings. But they weren’t for sale.

“The guy was like, um, ‘Hey, just sit down, let me teach you how to do this,’ and as I’m learning how to do the bead work, I’m getting history lessons on the beads that I’m doing,” James explains in a new episode of Human Powered: Humanity Unlocked podcast”

James tells his story of learning, “bead by bead,” and talks with public historian Adam Carr about what mastering this craft taught him about patience and humility. In this episode, you will also learn about James’ experience as a student in a unique Marquette University course designed as a blended classroom, with students who are incarcerated having space to share their knowledge with traditional college students.

It’s just one example of how folks in Wisconsin are using the humanities to help people overcome the dehumanization of incarceration. Tune in to Human Powered and join WH in changing the way we think about the carceral system and the people impacted by it.
